Black Gold of the Desert: Microbial Restoration and the Role of Organic Matter in Arid Soils

Résumé

This book examines the importance of organic matter in restoring Saharan and arid soils. It explains that arid soils are fragile because of water scarcity, low vegetation cover, salinization, weak organic inputs, and limited microbial activity. The book presents soil organic matter as the “black gold” of desert environments because it improves soil structure, water retention, nutrient availability, microbial life, and ecological resilience. It also discusses the role of microorganisms in decomposition, mineralization, humification, nutrient cycling, and biological soil crust formation. The author emphasizes that soil restoration in arid regions requires controlled organic amendments, good water and salinity management, and protection of environmental quality.
