Listeria monocytogenes: Threats to the Food Industry and Public Health is an academic reference book devoted to the microbiological, epidemiological, environmental and industrial significance of L. monocytogenes. The book first explains why listeriosis, although relatively rare, represents a major public-health concern because of severe invasive disease, high hospitalization and mortality rates, and the particular vulnerability of pregnant women, newborns, older adults and immunocompromised people. It then moves into the biology of the organism, covering taxonomy, pathogenic and non-pathogenic Listeria species, cellular traits, refrigeration growth, stress tolerance, serotypes, genetic lineages, clonal complexes, whole-genome sequencing, hypervirulent clones and food-adapted strains. Subsequent chapters broaden the analysis to environmental reservoirs and One Health transmission, including soil, water, plants, animals, wildlife, insects, climate-related factors and integrated surveillance. The book also compares organic and conventional farming risks, emphasizing manure, compost, irrigation water, wildlife exposure, animal housing and management practices. The final sections follow contamination pathways from farm to fork and examine high-risk food matrices such as dairy products, ready-to-eat meats, seafood, fresh produce, salads and refrigerated composite foods.
