Abstract

This book reconsiders William Elderton as a formative figure in news culture. Focusing on the sixteenth-century broadside ballad, it examines how cheap print, song, woodcut imagery, circulation networks, regulation, and performance combined to create an early mass medium. It analyses Elderton's strategies for establishing credibility through names, dates, locations, visual evidence, providential interpretation, and claims of immediacy, then tests these methods across a varied corpus of political, prodigy, civic, elegiac, moral, and comic ballads. The study situates Elderton within the emergence of a commercial news culture that anticipated later journalistic practices while remaining rooted in Elizabethan print and oral traditions.
