Abstract

This book explores the evolution of colistin from an early polymyxin antibiotic to an important Reserve agent against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. The book explains its mechanism of action and examines intrinsic, adaptive, chromosomal, and plasmid-mediated resistance, with particular attention to Lipid A modification and the mcr gene family. It also addresses the spread of resistance across human, animal, food, and environmental reservoirs. Finally, it reviews phenotypic and molecular detection methods, including broth microdilution, PCR, sequencing, and emerging rapid diagnostics, emphasizing accurate surveillance and integrated interpretation.
