Abstract

Solid Waste Management and Treatment is an educational and technical textbook devoted to the scientific, environmental, and operational management of solid waste. Written for students in process engineering, environmental engineering, environmental chemistry, and related fields, it follows a logical progression from basic definitions to advanced treatment methods. The book first explains the concept of waste, its multidimensional nature, classification, life cycle, sampling, and the Algerian regulatory framework, including national waste management programmes and institutions. It then studies household waste through its origin, composition, quantity, density, humidity, calorific value, carbon/nitrogen ratio, and other parameters needed to select appropriate treatment options. Subsequent chapters examine waste collection systems, transfer stations, landfilling, technical landfill centres, leachate, biogas formation, and landfill design. The book also presents biological treatment methods such as anaerobic digestion and composting, followed by recovery, recycling, selective sorting, and the limits of recycling. It further addresses incineration, energy recovery, flue gas treatment, special industrial waste, hazardous waste, and healthcare waste at risk of infection. Rich in tables, diagrams, formulas, and practical classifications, the book is a useful academic resource for understanding waste treatment technologies and their environmental and public-health implications.
